somebodies dance theater’s evocative imagery and signature lusciousness come to life in a new dance performance event entitled “Coop” on Friday, April 13th. Two performances at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm kick off 10 days of performances for Live Arts Fest, a curated dance and performance festival presented by San Diego Dance Theater at the White Box Live Arts in Liberty Station.
In “Coop,” husband and wife choreographers Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen challenge dancers and audiences to reconsider how we as humans share space. With references ranging from their experiences living in Israel - in the thick of the Israeli-Palestinian battle for space, to recent experiences as expecting parents – where both mother-to-be and baby-in-utero quite literally occupied the same space, the dance unfolds as an exposition on the joys and challenges of coexistence. The title “Coop” alludes to the chaos of a crowded and confined space for fowl. But if broken into two syllables, co-op, the title suggests a solution for how to share space successfully.
The philosophical thrust of the work is put into practice as the Sorensens have invited three different populations to collaborate in this performance. Their professional company, somebodies dance theater, is joined by select students from the San Diego City College Dance Program and select students from the Grossmont College Dance Department. In total, 22 dancers grace the stage in a piece that weaves luscious and athletic dance with an original video and projection design.
