Body History is a concert by Patricia Sandback that celebrates the idea that each dancer brings to a performance the living, breathing history of their life in dance. Every teacher they have had, every dance they have ever done or created, every bit of knowledge they have gained as a dance artist, will be visible during their performance. This makes for the incredibly rich experience the audience can have from watching dance. The cast in this concert includes twenty performers with an age range of 57 years. This roster includes many of the “rock stars” of early San Diego modern dance, artists who helped to create the rich dance life we have in our community, joined by seven emerging SDSU dance artists from the University Dance Company.
There are six dances. They will include three reconstructions of old dances and three new ones. In Duet in 7/4 Sandback will be dancing with a video of herself performing a solo from 35 years ago. The Toast, created in the 1980’s, brings back three of the original six dancers in a theater piece that demonstrates the value of perseverance. Towards Stillness is a solo that will be performed by six of the ten dancers who have performed the dance all over the world. New works will include Solitaire, a solo danced by Terri Shipman to Bachianas Brasileras No. 5, My Red Shoes, a solo danced by Erica Buechner, and Living Room Dances, performed by the University Dance Company.
