Local choreographers Blythe Barton, Khamla Somphanh, and Zaquia Mahler Salinas present SHADOWS: full-bodied dances that revive the soul. The season of autumn is recognized in many cultures as a time to acknowledge and honor the transitional nature of the spirit. In SHADOWS, these three powerhouse dance makers have come together to pay homage to the essence of the fall season with dances, new and resurrected, that shed light on the spiritual nature of the dancing body.
In SHADOWS, Blythe Barton shares "From Across the Room I felt Your Quake," a piece called "vibrating and sizzling"(Kris Eitland) in its first iteration. Re-worked for SHADOWS, this dance will take new expansive space in the White Box, filling the air with tension and contraposition. Her new work "Cellar Door," examines the un-seen and overlooked, around and below us.
Khamla Somphahn presents "Spatial Void" and "Path of Least Resistance." "Spatial Void" is inspired by the vastness of gravity and inner forces that take place in space as it relates to human behavior in our surrounding atmosphere. "Path of Least Resistance" explores finding a path of individuality. As we typically fall into following patterns of predecessors or comfort, it is through experiencing and listening to our emotional psyche we can define our own Path of Least Resistance.
Zaquia Mahler Salinas revives her 2012 work "Psychopomp," which embodies the archetypal characters of mythology who serve to guide the spirit through transition from this world into the next. Her new work titled "Conocimiento" celebrates traditional Mexican folklore in the body.
